Chapter 9

“Anti-ageing Qi”

Rejuvenate with the Energy of the Setting Sun

To stay youthful looking is a reflection of multiple factors, of which genetics, diet and one’s outlook in life play significant roles. The male and female sex hormones are responsible for their respective reproductive functions as well as the manifestations of the secondary sexual characteristics. In this aspect, sex hormones are responsible for the state and health of your skin, hair and body structure.

Practising Chi Dynamics produces a host of benefits which include relaxing the body and improving the blood flow to the extremities, especially the skin, hair and nails. In addition, the integration of the body, mind and spirit calms and strengthens one’s inner spirit and in this process, removes the far reaching effects of stress on the mind and body.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the role of the triple warmers has often been emphasised. This is not an organ but encompasses multiple bodily functions, namely the reproductive, excretory, and digestive functions. The triple warmer consists of the upper warmer, which affects both the cardiovascular and respiratory functions. The middle warmer relates to the digestive functions of the stomach, pancreas, liver, small intestine and to a certain extent the waste disposal system (overlapping with the lower warmer). This third warmer covers the reproductive, urogenital and excretory functions. No part of the triple warmers is to be left ‘cold’ as this would adversely affect one’s health.

The metal element energy has been described as a contracting energy, with its main effects on the lungs and large intestine. Accumulating the energy of the metal element enhances the function of the lower warmer and has a secondary effect on the lungs, and condition of the skin, hair and nails. In addition, metal element exercises enhance the flow of qi along the Inner Orbit.

The Ren channel meridian point Hui Yin plays an important role in the flow of qi along the Inner Orbit. This point is the key to the effectiveness of the metal element exercise. It is the starting point of the Yin and Yang energy channels. The harmonious synergy of the Lower Dan Tian and the Hui Yin is vital to quality qi flow.

Metal Element Exercise

This is a non-physical exercise which taps the powerful Yin energy of the setting sun. The qi of the setting sun is absorbed (Shou Yin Qi) through the Upper Dan Tian. Absorption of the qi of the setting sun also occurs at the Lao Gong master points in the palms.

This exercise is ‘powered’ by the Yi, or intent. The motion itself produces alkalinity in the body, a condition which is conducive to the body’s self- healing. Every movement is carried out with deliberate slowness. The master point Hui Yin has an upward connection to the throat and lower lips and a downward connection to the Yong Quan master point (kidney point number 1).
